Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opener Zak Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements made by captain Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made those words in multiple interviews following his team's loss in the second Ashes series against the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England now face a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I required," said Stokes.

But, following the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" observation after his side suffered a loss in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The team afterwards took a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his players had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the messaging from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this game."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket late on Saturday came during a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – left England 207-6 chasing a notional target of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia require four wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an insurmountable three-nil advantage with three matches played.

A loss would prolong England's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes series loss.

The current battle will be completed in just 11 days of play – after England fell the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"It's been tough. Australia is a very, very good side. It was always going to be hard touring here against them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his immediate future in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in the team's second innings on day four, extending his poor record against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a fifty and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

However, the opener said any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is talk externally. There's no discussion like that on Ollie amongst the players," he finished.
