European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
