French authorities to begin stopping small boats in English Channel after British demands
French officials have consented to begin stopping migrant vessels in the Channel, after an extended period of insistence from the United Kingdom.
The change in policy comes after the British leader wrote to the President asking him to back the initiative and stating there presently "lack any effective deterrent" in the Channel.
French security forces will be allowed to intercept the small boats at sea, but only before they've picked up their passengers, according to authoritative statements.
French authorities have infrequently intervened to prevent the overcrowded boats leaving the coastline because it is considered excessively high a risk to both personnel and civilians.
"It is essential that we implement these tactics this month... We have zero effective prevention in the Channel waters."
Now, a French naval police representative says personnel will start intervening at sea, with the aim of protecting human life.
Notably, the official ruled out the use of entanglement devices to stop boats, which had earlier been reported as a possible technique to snarl the propellers of the vessels.
The decision to take action at all is a significant step forward, following a short-lived change towards a more aggressive approach this warmer season, which ceased when the previous Interior Minister left office.
This was demonstrated in the summer month, preceding a meeting between the Prime Minister and President, when authorities were witnessed wading into the sea to slash the hulls of a vessel.
Currently French officials will again be allowed to stop boats before they pick up migrant passengers from the beaches of France's north coast, although it's not clear how the vessels will be stopped.
Powerful gusts are presently delaying the commencement of interceptions and the people-smuggling networks will be seeking ways to adjust to avoid detection, as they have frequently done in the previous instances.
UK immigration authorities and the Prime Minister's office have been approached for comment.
