Individuals Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Injections Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

New research suggests that individuals who come off popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.

Research printed in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals purchasing such drugs need to be aware of the risk of fast weight regain when the treatment ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about a year and a half.

Comparing Therapies

The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally experience a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Experts believe the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."

A Chronic Condition?

Health authorities recommend the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

Users who have discontinued the jabs report a intense resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced a switch that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," described an individual.

This challenge is exacerbated if users have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Growing Use

Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, experts caution that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits hinges on combined lifestyle changes.
