Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was convicted of planning a armed takeover in last fall and given more than 27 years in incarceration, but he continued under home detention pending appeals.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after recent developments emerged.

This encompassed seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a summons to a public vigil that could "allow for a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Flight Fears

In a document approving the arrest, the judge said intelligence from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his escape.

They also asked that Bolsonaro be permitted to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he required regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.

Background on Conviction

He was found guilty of orchestrating a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Lula.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a scheme which included plans to assassinate the current president and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been managing the former president's case.

The scheme was stopped because it failed to get the support of the armed forces officials. The current president was sworn in without issue on January 1st, 2023.

But a week later, on January 8th, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed public facilities in the capital, the capital city.

The law enforcement intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been encouraged by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, restore order and return him to office.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.
