The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Whenever a significant honors show nears, you'll find a demand for introducing additional classifications to honor underappreciated efforts and delight the passions of fans dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front since similar to blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification supporting my request remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and inevitably start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that cinema institutions don’t do it. Yet it remains an essential concession in the world of video games, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies presently include award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, intense tile-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Which classification works within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles launched regularly lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition completely that year
  • A different innovative game received no nominations in 2019
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked recently
  • Just some logic titles barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences in the world continuing this trend for many years.

The famous puzzle experience challenges famous sandbox experiences for the title of most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and engaging with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers are working at the hard edge interactive creation, producing among the purest expressions of gaming itself. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
